Blog #1 - Beginning of the Fall 2025 Semester

Previous experience with AI applications (e.g., ChatGPT) and how you have used them (e.g., writing assignments):
I have considerable experience using AI, particularly applications like ChatGPT and Magic School. My favourite way to use these tools is to generate rubrics or create “I can” statements for the lessons and units I teach. In other courses, I also use AI to check my grammar. As someone with dyslexia, I often find reading challenging, so AI helps me communicate more clearly.

Educational technology being used in your 3rd-year practicum placement:
This year, I will be working with MacBooks, iPads, a SMART Board, and Ozobots. I am especially excited to use all of these tools, as I already have some familiarity with them. The Ozobots, however, have been a significant learning curve during my past two years of fieldwork. My goal this year is to use them more confidently and integrate them effectively into my teaching.

What “burning” question do you have about the use of digital technologies in K to 9 education?
My burning question is: How young is too young for students to be introduced to AI technology? With new AI tools being developed every day, should we be teaching students to use them early on, or should we first prioritize fostering their independent and organic thinking?

Why is this question important to you?
This question matters to me because I know that if I had been introduced to AI at a young age, I likely would have relied on it too heavily instead of developing my own critical thinking skills. As an educator, I want to ensure that my students can think independently while also reflecting thoughtfully on their use of technology.
